ALICE IN WONDERLAND

- Alice (to herself)
What is the use of a book without pictures or conversation ?

- Rabbit
Oh dear!!! Oh dear!!! I will be too late!
(looking at the watch)

Narrator
Alice ran after the rabbit and she went down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge. After few minutes she found herself falling down a very deep well. When she felt the ground under her feet, she did not know where she should go as there was no trace of White Rabbit. Alice decided to follow one of the paths and see where it had its end. Suddenly she saw a large blue caterpillar, that was sitting on the top of the mushroom and smoking a long hookah.

Caterpillar
Who are you ?

Alice
I don’t know, sir, just at present – at least I know who I was when I got up this morning but I must have changed several times since then.

Caterpillar
What do you mean by that ? Explain yourself !

Alice
I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid, sir, because I’m not myself, you see.

Caterpillar
I don’t see.

Alice
I’m afraid I can’t put it more clearly, because I can’t understand it myself. It is quite complicated.

Caterpillar
It isn’t. So, tell me who are you ?

Alice (irritated)
I think you should tell me who you are, first!

Caterpillar
Why ?
(Alice turned away)
Come back! I have something important to say!
(Alice came back)
Keep your temper!
(Caterpillar slowly crawled away)

Narrator
Alice was so amazed with Caterpillar’s behaviour that she did not noticed when it went away. After few seconds she realised that had to find her path and White Rabbit or do something to get somewhere. Suddenly, she saw the Cheshire Cat.

Alice
Would you tell me, please, which way I should go from here ?

Cat
That depends on where you want to get to.

Alice
I don’t much care where.

Cat
Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.

Alice
So, as I get somewhere...

Cat
Oh, you’re sure to do that, if you only walk long enough

Alice
What sort of people live there ? (pointing right)

Cat
In that direction, lives a Hatter, and in that direction (waving left) lives a March Hare. Visit who you like: they are both mad.

Alice
But I don’t want to go to mad people!

Cat
Oh, you can’t help that, we are all mad here. I am mad. You are mad.

Alice
How do you know I’m mad ?

Cat
You must be , or you wouldn’t have come here! By the way, do you play croquet with the Queen today ?

Alice
I would like to but I haven’t been invited yet.

Cat
You will see me there!
(Cat vanished)

Alice
Well, now I should choose the right way! I will visit the March Hare.

(A Mad Tea-Party; a set out table; the March Hare and the Hatter are having tea; Alice sat down at the table)

March Hare
Have some juice

Alice
I don’t see any juice!

March Hare
There isn’t any!

Alice (angrily)
Then it wasn’t very nice of you to offer it!

March Hare
It wasn’t very nice of you to sit down without an invitation!

Alice
I didn’t know it was your table !

(silence)

Hatter
Take some more tea

Alice
I have had nothing yet so I can’t take more!

Hatter
You mean you can’t take less, it is very easy to take more than nothing!

Alice
(to herself)
I don’t understand! I should better go !

(Queen’s Croquet-Ground; a lot of white roses; three gardeners paint them red)

Two
Don’t splash paint over me like that!

Five
I couldn’t help that! Seven jogged my elbow!

Seven
That’s right, Five! Always lay the blame on others!

Five
You had better not talk! I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!

Two
What for?

Seven
That’s none of your business, Two!

Five
Yes it is his business! I will tell him – it was for bringing the cook tulips instead of onions!

Alice (she was watching them)
Would you tell me why you are painting those roses?

Two
Because, in this garden we should have red roses and we put white ones by mistake. And if the Queen found out we would have our heads cut off, you know!
Five (shouting)
Our Queen! Our Queen!

(Queen and King of Hearts enter with the White Rabbit, soldiers)

Queen (to Alice)
What is your name, child?

Alice
My name is Alice, your Majesty.

Queen (pointing to gardeners)
And who are they?

Alice
How should I know? It’s not my business!

Queen (angrily)
Off with her head!!! Off!!!

King (to the Queen)
Consider, my dear: she is only a child!

Queen (to gardeners)
What have you been doing here?

Two
We were trying...

Queen
I see! Off with their heads!!!

(everybody prepares to play croquet, the Cheshire Cat appears)

Cat
How do you like the Queen?

Alice
Not at all, she is so extremely...(Queen is next to Alice)....likely to win that it is hardly worth finishing the game.

(Queen smiled and passed on)

King (to Alice)
Who are you talking to?

Alice
It is my friend – a Cheshire Cat, let me introduce it.

King
I don’t like the look of it at all. However, it may kiss my hand if it likes.

Cat
I’d rather not!

(Cat disappears; game is going on)

Narrator
You can only guess who won this game. As you know this dream has, in fact, no end. Yes,yes my friends everything here was only Alice’s dream but it can also be your dream if you want to dream this dream.
