Halloween is celebrated on 31st October. It takes place on the eve of a major Catholic festival, All Saints' Day (1st
November). It is the night when ghost nand witches come out. All kinds of ghost, monsters and goblins are especially active on that night.
There are many symbols associated with Halloween. The most popular are:
-pumpkins,
-jack-o-lanterns (carved pumpkins with a candle inside)
-black cats,
-bats
-witches,
-ghosts
-skeletons,
-vampires,
-mummies,
-spiders.
Not only those symbols but also certain colours are strongly connected with Halloween and have their own special meaning. For example, the black colour symbolizes death, night, witches, bats, black cats, etc. Other Halloween colours are:
-orange - symbol of pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, autumn,
-purple - symbol of night and the supernatural,
-green - symbol of goblins and monsters,
-red - symbol of blood and evil.
No Halloween party can do without masks and costumes. People, especially children, disguise themselves as witches, ghost and other monsters, they put on masks or paint their faces.
Another famous Halloween tradition is called "trick or treat".Disguised children go to people's houses, knock on the door and say: trick or treat. The person who opens the door must give the children some sweets. If not, the children play a trick on them.
Making jack-o-lanterns is also very popular, especially in the USA. People carve out pumpkins and put a candle inside. Then they put the lanterns in front of their houses to frighten away witches and ghosts.
Halloween is a very happy holiday, but also a bit scary because of all the ghosts, monsters and other creatures. It is more and more popular in poland, too.
