Curiosities about the U.S.A.

The United States of America is the country of all cultures, religions and races. The territory concerns 9,631,418 sq km (Third largest country by size after Russia and Canada). The country is divided into 50 states with its largest state – Alaska, and the smallest – Rhode Island. It borders with Canada, Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific Ocean.
The Largest cities are New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Huston, Philadelphia, San Diego, Detroit, Dallas, Phoneix, San Antonio.

The capital of the USA is Washington D.C. This name was taken from the surname of the first American’s president – George Washington. Todays president’s name is Barrack Obama and he lives in the White House.

The national flag of the U.S is called ‘Stars and Stripes’.
• It is made up of 13 red and white stripes representing first 13 colonies (Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, South Carolina , North Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nowy Jork, Pensilvania, Rhode Island and Virginia)

• and 50 stars on a blue background representing 50 states of America ( Alaska, Texas, California, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, Wyoming, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Idaho, Cansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Washington, North Dakota , Oklahoma , Missouri , Florida, Wisconsin, Georgia , Illinois, Iowa, New York , North Carolina , Arkansas ,Alabama Luisiana , Missisipi, Pensilvania , Ohio, Virginia , Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana , Maine, South Carolina , West Virginia, Maryland, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Vermont , New Hampshire, New Jersey , Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island).

The national bird and the symbol of the U.S is a Bald Eagle and the national flower is Rose.

Americans are patriots attached to all symbols of their country. All of them know by heart the words of the national anthem which title is “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Their currency is the U.S. Dollar. Each Dollar is marked with the motto of this country “In God we Trust”

Languages spoken in the U.S are: English (82,1%), Spanish (10,7%) and other languages (6,2%).

Important National Holidays:

• Independence Day - celebrated on the 4th of July
• Thanksgiving Day – celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November
• Columbus Day – the second Monday in October

Famous people from the past:

There were many famous celebrities who formed the American culture:
- Marylin Monroe – (Norma Jeane Baker ) famous actress, singer and model of the fifties.
- Elvis Prestley – one of the most popular singers of the twenties, often called “The King of Rock-and-Roll”
- Michael Jackson – called the King of Pop. A global figure of pop culture for over four decades.
- Neil Armstrong – the first person to set foot on the moon
